The transcription is based on a block printed Ming edition of 西廂記五卷解證五卷會真記一卷附錄一卷/The Romance of the Western Chamber: five fascicles, with five fascicles of annotations, one fascicle of Huizhen ji, and one fascicle of appendix. Original character forms have been preserved, but punctuation has been modernised in order to improve readability. The wording of the original text has not been altered.
The source text is printed in vertical columns, reading from top to bottom and from right to left. In this transcription, the layout has been normalised to modern horizontal, left-to-right reading order. Although the reading direction has been changed, the original pagination has been retained and is recorded using <pb n="…" facs="…"/>.
Dramatic structure follows TEI guidelines: stage directions are encoded with <stage>, and spoken lines with <sp> containing <speaker>. Lyrics are marked up with <lg> and <l> elements.
