         <projectDesc>
            <p>This edition was created by encoding transcriptions of 'Astrea [Aphara Behn to Lord
               Arlington].'. The base for my transcription was WJ Cameron's <hi rend="italics">New
                  Light on Aphra Behn</hi> (1961) a printed resource which covers Behn's time as a
               spy in Antwerp. The transcription was enriched and amended through a study of the
               original manuscripts on State Papers Online (Gale) and in-person at the National
               Archives. This allowed me to include information relating to the ciphers, which was
               not recorded by Cameron, and to check my interpretation of the plain text matched
               Cameron's transcription.</p>
         </projectDesc>
         <editorialDecl>
            <p> The main purpose of this encoding is to faithfully represent all the ciphered
               elements of the text. To do this, the two different ciphers have been marked out from
               one another to differentiate between the numeric and symbolic ciphers used. The
               latter has been encoded with a rend value connected to a custom font so that the
               characters can display as their respective cipher symbols on a html browser. I have
               also encoded the decrypted sections in the interline marginalia as manuscript
               additions in order to allow for two different witnesses to be presented in the
               edition's functionality. On the right hand of transcription window users can chose
               between the 'original' and 'decoded' versions to either appreciate the text in its
               original code, or read a plaintext version. </p>
